Still looking for current. Light wind and hot

Thursday afternoon/evening is still looking good. If we find the current it should be earlier, but still Thursday. Ian the invertor is the old type (black) that is Xantrex do not supply spares. So if the guy you have been in contact with has any spare boards it may be worth your while getting him to have a look at it. Could you persuade him to do it on Friday and finish during the week end. Otherwise I will buy a small cheap car type invertor and make do with that.

Had a big lunch today: eggs bacon sauté potatoes so light supper later.

Cheers

Motor sailed all day with a moderate current. Morning brought rain which Rob and Joyce enjoyed washing hair and themselves.

Current improved and eventually got the spinnaker up just after 12:00, but not for long. A squall with good rain and 20 knots of wind soon put paid to that, But Rob and I got a bath while dropping the spinnaker.

We are only going to get to Trini on Thursday (2.5days) at current progress. Ian will they still take us out and fix the sail drive before Monday?

Supper Spaghetti tuna

Cheers

What bad night with lots of banging. Makes sleeping very difficult, so all a bit jaded today. Last night the wind came up above 20knots so had 3 reefs in just in case. By morning the wind had died again so took all reefs out – except the halyard is twisted so could not go to the top – settled for one reef and motor sailed all day. The dolphins gave us a fantastic display just as the sun was setting. One in particular did a spectacular jump – must have been at least 1.5m out of the water – and curved back into the water in a perfect dive.

Supper Stew and rice followed by pub fruit and custard.

We are where the Amazon empties into the Atlantic and joins the current flowing north. The water is black from the Amazon and there is no wind to speak of. The first rain squall to provide enough rain for a wash arrived about lunch time. What a relief to be able to feel clean and not sticky with sweat and salt. As I thought there might be some heavy winds associated with the squall we took the sails down – didn’t materialize - and haven’t put anything up as there is no wind. A second and long rain shower provided Joyce with enough water to wash her hair. We are well and truly into the ITCZ – let’s hope it won’t before too long.

Hoping to get to Chagaramas late Wednesday or early Thursday. Trust Power Boats and Gittian’s will be ready for us.

Supper sauté bully beef  with sauté potatoes jelly fruit and custard.

Cheers

Chris

PS Ian, Plan to bring the old drive on to Oz for your disposal. We plan to tie up at the fuel jetty and hope we will find Peake easily. The invertor is a Xantrex model 25. The fault occured after one plug shorted due to sea water ingress. By the way the same sea water took out the gas switches too. We checked the reset buttons - seem OK but have no effect. We suspect that the thyristors may be blown - but are not experts. If a quick fix is possible that would be great, but I don't want to hang arround waiting for spares. We can get a small car invertor for all we need. I hope Gittian won't keep us waiting!!

We crossed the equator last evening at 18.28 – from autumn to spring in the blink of an eye. George produced a fantastic spaghetti bolognaise for supper last night.

In the early hours of the morning I awoke to a great surging and thought that sounds a bit rough. I found Rob enjoying flying through the water with 26knots of wind on the beam. A bit much I said so lets take in a reef. No 3 reef set and things calmed down so what. It didn’t last too long though and by 10:00 we were motor sailing.

George decided he would make supper again and produced a stunning curry.

Not much wind motor sailing mostly, but getting to sail every now and again. Clouds around but no rain, which would be great to get the salt off the boat. It is hot and sticky.

Had eggs and bacon for lunch with home made bread. Guess supper will be left over curry.

All well but hot

Hi All,

19 May 2012

I was not happy when I went up to finish my emails today. I bought a hour of WiFi which I assumed meant I could use it when I wanted to, but no the hour was for one hour from whenever you first logged on and could not be carried over. So I wasted quite a bit of time getting no where. However, the guy for the fuel arrived and I got that sorted very easily. George had a torrid time sorting out the starboard heads pump, which now works. There were no spares available in Cape Town, but we managed to make a Whale pump valve work. We all took the afternoon off – Rob to an internet café in town and the rest of us lazing around the pool.

20 May 2012

Up early ready to lift anchor and set sail for Trinidad. We cleared the breakwater by 07:30 set the spinnaker in 18knots. Great sailing until the wind increased to 20 – 25 and evening was approaching. So down with spinnaker and up genny. Just as well as the wind got up to 26-27knots. Didn’t see many fishing boats during daylight, but they all popped out after dark. Only had one fairly close encounter – passed about 200m away. Always amazes me how these guys survive one boats that are little more than a grown up dabchick and here they are 30 – 40nm from the nearest land anchored in 20m in 25knots of wind fishing.

Supper a Brazilian pot roast and potatoes. I don’t think I have ever had meat tougher than this.

21 May 2012

Position 14:00 UTC -3  01 52.801S 040 45.191W

Good days sailing until about 19:00 when the wind backed and increased gusting to 24knots. Down Spinnaker up genny.

Joyce not feeling to well so George made supper – Spaghetti bolognaise followed by fruit and custard.

22 May 2012

Position 14:00 UTC -3  00 18.105S 043 05.574W

Somehow we seemed to have entered the northern hemisphere weather – wind has backed from SE to NE and blew hard during the night, but eased by morning. So for the first time since entering the trades we hoisted the main and with current helping - 2knots – we manage 6 – 7knots COG. When the wind dropped to 13 - 15knots I decided to try the asym. Just as we got it up the wind increased to 18knots and it was pushing us over more than forward so back to genny.

Though Joyce is feeling better George is cooking supper tonight. So waiting to find out what’s coming.

Ian, I hope all is sorted for our stop at Chagaramas. We should get there 31st May - 1st Jun. I think that is a week end - will they work or will we have wait until Monday?

Justin, Thank you

Cheers

Chris

Letter from Rob Browne - Arrived Safely in Fortaleza Brazil

Arrived in Fortaleza, Brazil (4 degrees South, 39 degrees West) Thursday
night 17 May after having made a detour to miss Doc's Rocks (Atol das
Rocas). So now about 6 days behind Chris's schedule which he has finally
agreed was a bit optimistic. Apart from being a bit slower than anticipated
overall we have done well on this leg of the journey.
We left St Helena on morning of the 30 April after having a great time
there. Great to have a soaking fresh water shower, have clean salt free
clothes to put on. Enjoyed the meals and beers at Ann's Place.
Good fry up breakfast with chips. All the thinks we cant cook on the boat.
We were able to see all the places we had planned to see plus more. Joyce
befriended one of the ladies at customs, Rosemond, who offered to take us on
a trip around the Island in her car. It was fantastic to have all her local
knowledge to help us and we saw a lot
more than we expected. As it was a weekend we had a problem getting
diesel and so stayed an extra day. On the Sunday Chris and I went for a walk
from Jamestown to the foot of the heart shaped waterfall, about a 5 mile
loop. This plus the climb up the 699 steps made sure I was quite stiff that
evening. Enjoyed a beer at Donny's Place on the seafront. The RMS ST Helena
had docked that afternoon while we were on our walk. It seemed the whole
town had come down to the front for the occasion. Interesting watching the
people and the containers of supplies being ferried by pontoon from the ship
to the landing.

After loading the diesel on Monday morning in calm weather we weighed
anchor. Except for anchoring Discovery in the Hout Bay bay for the Opening
Cruse off the breakwater this was the first time I had been involved in
laying or weighing an anchor and considering the depth in St Helena of 20
meters and the anchor chain and rope we laid of 80 meters it was done with
no hiccups. We had a good view of the RMS St Helena departing back to Cape
Town while we doing this. However to add to our woes George noticed while
lifting the anchor that the winch was not bolted on tightly. We will be
installing a bracket in Fortaleza to compensate for this. Also the gearbox
on the port sail drive started to make a bad noise which got worse. Some
water was also seeping into the bilge below Chris's cabin where the port
engine and sail drive are situated and so after cleaning it out and
inspecting what was happening down there we decided not to use it. If the
seals go we would have more than quite a big problem. Chris and the owner
are sorting out what needs to be done. Justine and Rod Turner-Smith have
been a great help finding out and letting us know what facilities are
available where. At first we thought we would have to go to Trinidad but it
seems that everything we need should be available at Prickly Bay in Granada,
our original port of call in the Caribbean but fixing it will most probably
require us to spend an extra 4 days there. None of the crew seems to be
complaining. While we are in Fortaleza, Chris and the owner will have a
better opportunity to decide what to do as trying to sort things out over
the satphone is not easy. Having two motors, at least we are in no imminent
danger as most yachts have only one engine anyway. However going through the
Panama Chanel with only one engine may be difficult. Theoretically all boats
going through must be able to maintain 8 knots and the turbulents in the
locks need strong engines not only while they are filling and emptying but
also when the big ships you are sharing the lock with start their engines to
exit the lock.

After a few days out we started to get into the routine of watches again.
The mid South Atlantic Ocean is a lonely place. Days would go by with out
seeing a ship, a bird or anything. Just a circle of water around the boat
which is pointed in the way we want to go. Today looks just like yesterday
and tomorrow will also look the same. The moon was waning so the nights got
darker and darker and the watches seemed to take longer and longer. The wind
dropped at times and we had to use the motor most of those days. If any one
sees Jeremy Nel, tell him he was right. But also tell him that seeing he
went round the Horn he should contact us about going through the Panama
Chanel with us and then he can say he has been round both the south and
north of South America. I am sure I can get him a good deal with the
skipper.

Then one day we woke up and the wind had started to pick up, the current was
running with us and the cat was under sail on its way again at a good rate
of knots. The birds came back even landing on the boat at night for a rest;
we started to see ships again, the flying fish were jumping. Soon the
dolphins gave us a show and even a
humpback whale swam under the cat. We were nearing land again. We
are still eating well and had our last fresh steak meal only a few days ago.
The fresh meat has definitely lasted well. Joyce has kept us guessing and
conjured up some super culinary delights, even jelly and custard to go with
the tined fruit. Our beer stocks and other essentials are starting to run
low and we will be replenishing our supplier in Fortaleza.

The mooring at Fortaleza is part of a snazzy hotel with a big swimming pool
and other facilities. Last time Chris was here they had a good all you can
eat buffet which is still the case but a bit more expensive now at R160
each. Enjoyed all the salads and desserts! Went into the ´city`on Friday and
did the immigration and customs which took all morning after which we had a
drink at the very smart local yacht club. Then got our supplies in a 24 hour
big local Supermarket.
Had a stroll and a meal on the promanade which is like Sea Point with big
high rise blocks of flats but five times as long with a great beach, volly
ball courts, a big craft market and lots of cafes and restururants. Spent
this morning doing our running repairs, filling up with diesel and water and
now in town relaxing. We will be on our way to Trinadad early Sunday
morning.

Landfall in Fortaleza

Hi All,

17 May 2012

After a good night things got kinda slow at 12:15 so motor sailed the rest of the way to Fortaleza. One ship passed in the night, then 30nm from Fortaleza we started picking up the fishing boats. Really very unseaworthy looking craft. How they survive?? Otherwise easy sail into the marina at Marina Park Hotel at 18:00. Dropped the anchor in the middle of the harbour and reversed into a n empty space. What bliss to head for the showers, a swim, a cerverja then dinner at the buffet.

18 May 2012

Unfortunately a customs official arrived and we had to take the long trip to Policia Federale for immigration, customs and finally the port captain. Took the best part of the morning. On the way back we stopped off at the Itati Clube for a drink then on to a super market to stock up. After loading all the goodies on to the boat Rob and I took off walking up into the old town to look for bits and pieces we need. We did a lot of walking and battling with the language, but we got the most important bits.

I have sent the others off to the promenade while I catch up here.

Off to Trinidad tomorrow,

Cheers

Chris

Managed to sail from 03:45 until 13:30 when frustration necessitated engine on once more. Fortunately we are in a good current – at last – so though we are motoring at 4+knots we are doing 6+ COG. Looking good for an evening arrival in Fortaleza tomorrow.

Had some fun watching dolphins playing at the bows. Very different from the ones back home – light grey with a narrower beak. Also I think we had a whale dive under the boat – a small one only about 7m. Black with a dorsal fin like a hump back, but looked more like a over sized dolphin.

Supper left overs followed by fruit and custard.

Looking forward to showers and getting really clean.

Cheers

Chris

Position 14:30 UTC -2  04 29.619S 033 17.940W

After a good run this morning the wind has abandoned us and we are motor sailing – 310nm to go very frustrating. The crew saw three dolphins being playful, but otherwise I am coming to the conclusion that there is no life in the ocean. Last night we were visited by two birds needing a rest. A lot of squawking as one skidded around on the solar panel. Gone at first light.

We are heading straight for Doc’s atoll, which would pass/hit in the dark, therefore before it gets dark we will gybe.

Supper bully beef pasta followed by fruit and custard.

Frustrated but well

Position 14: UTC -2  07 09.164S 030 01.071W

We lost the battle of the gybe and did it at 15:30. We are now heading straight for Atol des Rocas (Doc’s rock). Otherwise not much happening. Making water and keeping the starboard tank topped up.

Supper Tuna chacaluka and smash followed by pub and fruit.

14 May 2012

Position14:00 UTC -2  05 53.372S 031 34.266W

Almost another quiet day, but we did have some excitement when a tanker loomed up behind us on a collision course (AIS thought so) When we got their name and we called on VHF they responded and thankfully altered course to 2.5nm behind us. Another general cargo vessel passed some 5nm ahead of going to the north east. A really exciting day.

Supper Stew and smash followed by fruit and custard.

Hope to be in Fortaleza by Friday.

All well

Position 14:00 UTC -2  07 22.965S 27 51.702W

Had good day from 14:00 yesterday to today managed 132nm. If we keep this up we will be in Fortaleza on Friday. The wind is trying hard to force us to gybe, but we are trying to scrape past the corner of Brazil. Wait to see who wins. We have had no current to speak of but once round the corner I am hoping to pick the Guinea current. I guess it is time we had a landfall again – a shower is definitely needed all round.

Haven’t been using the port motor, but it is running at present in neutral, which is fine except when the boat speed is sufficient to turn the prop. Then we hear a noise that doesn’t sound good and seems to getting worse.

Supper the last of the steak with smash and peas followed by fruit and custard.

Beautiful night but light wind – motored from 03:00 until 09:00 when the wind picked up and has stayed with us for the rest of the day. All quiet and no sea life no even much in flying fish or birds.

Supper left over curry followed by pud.

Crew fit and well

Quiet day but hopefully still managing 4 knots. Had a little excitement this morning when I decided we should get the twist out of the top of the spinnaker. Had to take the snuffed sail up and down a few times before we eventually got rid of the twist. Otherwise sunny skies but light wind.

Too early for supper today. Joyce has still to decide what to give us.

Ian any thoughts on what to do about the port motor?

Cheers

Another glorious night. Sailing at an average of 4.9knots great moon and not cold. We are very definitely in the tropics – nights cool days hot. The long run on the motor plus sun on the panels has kept the batteries up so haven’t motored as yet.

Position 14:00 UTC -2  09 16. 52S 019 49.634W

Wind backed so put in a gybe and headed more west. Long discussion on our speed. We are definitely slower than I anticipated and so far we have had no help from any current. Otherwise a good day of sailing even if at only 4+ knots.

Supper Left overs plus a fried egg followed by butterscotch pud and fruit.

Position 14:30 UTC -2  08 30.260S 021 46.821W

One of the few ships passed in the night – a fishing vessel with lights like a chokka boat. Wind has picked up and we are maintaining 5+knots – long may it last. Half way to Fortaleza at last.

Supper Tuna Pasta followed by chocolate pud and fruit.

Super night – full moon though cloudy with wind. What a pleasure. But sad to say it didn’t last. By 10:00 we were motoring again and have been all day. Beautiful day – if only there was more wind. According to the charts we should have 11 – 16 knots and we are half that. Tried running the port motor but the sail drive noise just doesn’t sound good. So back on the faithful starboard motor.

Supper Tuna bolognaise followed by jelly and custard

4 May 2012

Position 14 UTC  13 57.479S 013 46.834W

Cleaned out the port engine room to check for leaks. It appears to be leaking under the rear engine mounting, difficult to tell if it is the seal or the flange, however the leak is very small and quite containable. The book says that if a leak occurs the engine should be shut down, so we are not using for propulsion. To add to the concerns, the sail drive has developed a noise that could either be bearings or gears – bearings bad gears I can live with.

Sailing is getting more difficult as the wind is deserting us. We ended up motoring from 13:30 until 19:30. Shut down more for sleep rather than any wind.

Supper Tuna curry and rice followed by guavas and custard.

5 May 2012

Position 14 UTC  13 17.068S 015 18.625W

Wind light again so motor sailed from 08:30 until 13:00. Slow day. Got a good breeze at 15:40 (19 knots), lasted for twenty minutes, then back to 6 – 8 knots.

Joyce spent time in her hammock.

Supper Fried Bully beef slices with smash.

We have got to get more and current. Lets hope tomorrow will be better.

3 May 2012

Position 12 UTC 14 31.398S 011 41.838W

First night watch I have had with a moon. It was great and what’s more we also had some wind, which a lot more than I can say for now (17:15 UTC). Lets hope this only a short holiday the wind is taking. Up until now I was expecting to make Fortaleza round about 16th, so lets pray for some wind – not too much.

Ran the port engine in neutral for 2hrs this morning. The ingress was no greater, but the sail drive is making a diff whining type of noise. To find the water ingress I guess we are going to have to spend some time in the engine room with a rag. Not too many volunteers.

Supper the last steak (we have managed to keep a few things frozen in the fridge’s freezer compartment, but the steak is starting to de-thaw)

All well

Cheers

Woken up at 01:30 with spinnaker wrap. Once it was sorted out we put the jib and toke it easy until daylight. Spinnaker up but wind variable so gave up at 16:30 and sailed on with the jib. The port engine room is getting water from some where –not a lot but something we must keep an eye. Trouble is we cannot tell where it is coming from. Also water maker is leaking a little oil so something that needs to be watched.
Supper Tuna pasta (delicious)

2 May 2, 2012

Position 12 UTC 15 07.618S 009 28.547W

Another spinnaker wrap 01:00. So up with jib again. It has been cloudy for the last two days and the wind tends to shift – miss the shift and bingo a wrap.
Things settled down and by 10:30 had the bag up again. Sun has come out too so things are looking up. After a couple or squalls passed by – missed us – the horizon cleared and the wind veered to put on a parallel course to the rum line. Lets hope it stays like this for a long time. Course good speed good (+- 6knots)
Supper Bully beef mixed with fried potatoes
Crew all fine.
